From an early age Debi Botos has cultivated an interest in the Gypsy music of Hungary, where she was born into a family of musicians. Now 28, she continues that exploration in combination with a serious study of the tradition we know as jazz manouche. She excels not only as a interpreter, but as a composer. Here’s Debi playing one of her own compositions, “Reminisce”, at Budapest DjangoFest in 2023.
Debi calls Toronto home these days and you can find her gigging locally on a regular basis. Beyond that, she has been a featured performer right here at Django in June in 2022, Stephane Wrembel’s Django A GoGo (Town Hall theater in New York City), Budapest DjangoFest, the Midwest Gypsy Swing Festival (Madison, WI), TD Toronto and TD Markham jazz festivals and JazzFM91’s “Discover Women in Jazz” and “Sound Of Jazz” series. She has upcoming concerts in Germany, France and the US.
Debi is now in the process of crowdfunding for her first album, which will feature artists like Mozes Rosenberg, Aurore Voilqué, Jeno Lisztes and Ludovic Beier. You can contribute to making that project a reality here. Please do! Meantime, enjoy another clip of Debi & Co. rockin’ it at “Budapest Django Feszt”.
